We are proud to continue our support of Camp Horizon as a Premier Sponsor for their annual “Foster the Funk” fundraiser. On Saturday May 1st Zoo Atlanta will serve as an exciting new venue and host. Fortunately the 2020 event was held before the pandemic shut down and raised just over $120,000. Please find more information on the event portal if you would like to attend or support their annual fundraiser (to be held in the partially open Ford Pavilion and social distancing measures will be in place).
Camp Horizon is a GA local non-profit with a mission to help restore dignity and hope to Atlanta’s youth in foster care. Formed in 1982 – Camp Horizon has helped hundreds of emotionally wounded children from foster care backgrounds grow into healthy and productive members of society.
According to the Division of Family and Children Services, the current high school graduation rate for foster youth is 11 percent. However, 74 percent of foster youth that participated in Camp Horizon programming from 2001 to 2013 graduated from high school, with 48 percent going on to enter college. This is all possible because Camp Horizon provides a safe place for them to grow and be loved while providing “family” and connections that are often missing in their lives.
Partnering with organizations such as DFACS and Camp Twin Lakes (in Rutledge, GA), Camp Horizon has developed year-round programs centered on teaching the “3 R’s”: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. During its summer camp for foster kids, Camp Horizon provides life changing experiences at state of the art camping facilities while uniquely maintaining a one-to-one camper to counselor ratio.
Our colleague, Andrew Henry, has attended numerous week-long summer camps since 2012 and currently serves on the Camp Horizon board. We are proud to be a sponsor of this outstanding organization that supports children in the metro Atlanta area.
